When you buy a map from the Fantasy Map Market it’s yours to use in your projects. If the map is part of our Unique Map Policy then you are the only person who can use the map.
However, there are a few conditions to the use of maps bought from the Fantasy Map Market. These conditions are designed to prevent abuse of our maps.
- Commercial intent
- Attribution
- Businesses
Commercial intent
The maps can be included in commercial end products (i.e. products where end users will be charged) when the map is not the primary value of the product.
A few examples:
If you’re an author and you want to include the map in your novel. Awesome. Please go ahead. The primary value of the novel is the story, not the map.
If you’re a games master and you want to include the map in an adventure book then fantastic. Please go ahead. The primary value of the adventure book is the adventure not solely the map.
The two scenarios above are exactly why this site was created. To provide maps to the worldbuilding community for their novels, adventures and homebrew worlds.
If you use one of the maps in this way please share it with me, I’d love to know what you’re creating.
However.
If you want to bundle a few of the maps together and sell them on as a group. Nope. That isn’t ok. Even if you were to add an icon pack into the bundle. Though if you’d like to become an affiliate, do get in touch.
If you want to sell prints of our maps then again, this isn’t ok as the map is the primary value.
Note to authors: I understand at some point you may want to sell prints of your world’s map to fans. As a fan there is something special about being able to hang a map of your favourite story on a wall. If you’re in this position, please contact me. I’m happy to discuss permission.
Attribution
I’m an artist who loves creating fantasy maps. As part of creating maps it’s great when one of your maps is used for a project and you get to see your name listed alongside the map. It’s the same as an author who sees their name on the front of a book for the first or 100th time.
So if you do buy one of my maps and use it in your novel, adventure book or game I’d appreciate a small attribution, where possible.
Something as simple as “Map design by Vancano” would be great.
Businesses
My goal with this website is to provide beautiful maps (particularly world maps) at a reasonable price for the worldbuilding community.
I’m not here to take work away from the skilled, dedicated and talented cartographers who rely on commissions from companies. So if you want to use one of my maps and you’re a company who turns over more than £80,000 (UK VAT threshold) per year then please contact me for commercial rates.
Maps by other artists
Please note the above map license relates to all maps created by Nate Smith. From time to time I may sell maps or tools by other artists.
Please see the product description for links to their own map license.
